The Handbell Choir of St. Paul’s Church rings the three octave (37 bells) Edith Soule Memorial Handbells and three octaves (37) of chimes (Schulmerich). This choir rings pieces for the entire ensemble (11 people) as well as solos, duets, and quartets.Their repertoire includes sacred and secular music. The handbells are also regularly used to accompany psalms and hymns at the Sunday liturgy.
The Handbell Choir is a member of the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers (AGEHR).They are called English handbells because they were first used in that country as a way for ringers to practice their change ringing indoors, out of the cold and the ears of neighbors.Over time music was created recognizing them as independent instruments in their own right. The AGEHR is a non-profit group promoting handbells throughout the country. This organization offers festivals and workshops annually. The Handbell Choir regularly participates in Rhode Island AGEHR events. The Handbell Choir rings at the Sunday 10:30 AM Eucharist several times a year, as well as at Advent Lessons & Carols, the 5 PM Christmas Eve Eucharist, and statewide events and community celebrations. This choir regularly presents community Christmas programs.
Rehearsals are on Thursday from 4:45 to 6:15 p.m.Anyone, teenage and older, is welcome.Reading music is not required.Attending rehearsal and enjoying music are the only requirements.
